Business and IT leaders are not always on the same page when it comes to priorities but they do agree that they want to abstract via new interfaces (we will call these contracts) the business benefits from the underlying applications, data repositories and systems. By abstracting the assets from the underlying applications and platforms, the value can be used in new ways.

Therefore, productivity and higher levels of automation depend on exposing applications as a series of flexible contracts that are capable of being quickly or automatically assembled into business processes or data-centric views. The assembly would be independent of the underlying systems or applications or previous integration activities.

Need to approach from the top (strategically decide on contracts) and bottom (solve today’s problems).

Questions to ask yourselves

  • How do we identify what business benefits to elevate or abstract?
  • Is the maintenance of existing IT base questioned?
  • Are priorities based on Business Strategy and/or IT strategy linkage?
